The theme chosen for the 8th Rio de Janeiro Reinsurance Meeting, “Supporting Development”, could not be more timely.

During the take over of Mrs. Solange Paiva Vieira as Susep’s superintendent, held on March 22, Economy Minister Paulo Guedes pointed out the importance of insurance and reinsurance for the country’s development plans, and the need to reduce the participation of the State in our sector, questioning its dispensable presence in the control of a local reinsurer through Banco do Brasil and Caixa Econômica Federal. And the reason for its presence in key branches, such as housing, rural, work accidents, among others. The superintendent addressed the role of insurance and reinsurance in the development of our economy, citing key areas such as infrastructure, construction, transportation and civil liability.

These issues highlight the perspectives that insurance is facing in Brazil. In this promising scenario, nothing can be achieved without a strong reinsurance market that supports this development. The volume of works to be contracted, for example, far exceeds the capacity of retention of the market. Without a strong and active reinsurance, the needs of guarantees provided, the insurance of civil liability, property, transport; all this interconnected framework must have a solid support for its implementation.

This can only be obtained through reinsurance plans made available by companies operating in the country. We are confident about the development of the country and our industry in particular. The new government is just beginning its work, and as is natural in every beginning, the interrelation between the areas still seems inefficient, but in the sectors related to the economy we can observe a great popular support, with much enthusiasm and confidence, which has been honored by the highest governmental spheres to live up to the trust of the population and our market.
