The prospect of a resumption of growth, driven mainly by the structural reforms that the country will undertake, are encouraging for the insurance and reinsurance sector. After going through a period of deep recession, the Brazilian economy has shown signs of recovery, especially with the first round of privatization of the current government.
“The country’s infrastructure scenario is challenging. We need investments in railways, highways, airports and also in more schools, public health and food. Although the first adjustments of the government are difficult, I believe that public money will get where it should,” says Eduardo Toledo, president of Som.us, one of Latin America’s largest insurance and reinsurance distribution and consulting companies. “The economy does not develop without insurance, and insurance, in turn, does not grow without a strong economy,” says Eduardo.
In terms of reinsurance, Toledo recognizes that the challenges for this year are great. The sector has been bittering losses in the past two years due to severe catastrophic events. As a result, rates have increased for several segments and premiums have fallen. According to Susep data, the volume of reinsurance premiums in 2018 decreased by 2.3% in nominal terms. In addition to the stagnation in infrastructure, the economic crisis ended up affecting companies’ investments in risk management, prevention and protection systems. “The claims came and the market suffered the shocks. With this, today, reinsurers are more judicious, “he says.
In the midst of so many challenges, Som.us stands out, according to Toledo, contributing to the development of the sector. The professional qualification of its team is another major concern of Som.us, which maintains several channels for the teaching and dissemination of knowledge. Toledo reports that these channels range from the daily transmission of “Harvard Tips” to training through Som.us University. “It is a project that was born of the will to teach and train people for the insurance and reinsurance market,” he says. He points out that the online courses, which already offer certification to employees, will be expanded to the brokers of all the advice.
“If we can not convey what we have learned, there is no point in accumulating knowledge. Our goal is to educate human beings aware of the needs of the new client that is emerging and that brings with it a differentiated awareness. Therefore, we must be very attentive with the new generations to even be able to prepare our brokers, “he says. In this respect, Toledo emphasizes the importance of brokers. “The broker is able to add knowledge of the cause in the elaboration of the best terms and conditions for its clients, the insured. And that makes the difference, especially in the case of quotation and risk analysis, since it holds all the history, all the baggage of risk information, “he says.
