In january 25th 2019, an unprecedented tragedy shook the our country. The Vale tailings dam rupture, in Brumadinho (MG), resulted, without doubt, in the biggest environmental disaster from mining in Brazil. When the Córrego do Feijão mine dam collapsed, the scenario became dramatic, leaving a trail of indefinable destruction. The volume of 11.7 million cubic meters of tailings caused the death of 259 people. Eleven remain missing. In last year’s first issue, Insurance Corp magazine produced a feature story, signed by journalist and editor Carlos Alberto Pacheco, that showed how the absence of an efficient risk management is capable of provoking disasters with unpredictable consequences. The report, with the title Without prevention, losses are incalculable, was the winner of the 2019 National Insurance Journalism Awards, in the category“Specialized Press”. It was evident in the story, that in the case of the dam ruptures in Brumadinho and also in Mariana there was negligence by the enterprise, that includes, evidently, risk management, and lack of a rigorous overseeing by the environmental bodies. One of the sources heard in the text, the International Insurance Law Association (Aida/Brasil), reinforced: “Abstaining to enact contention and mitigation measures of a potential event are actions and omissions that aggravate risk and can lead to a negative from the insurer”.
